Michael S. Milnarik
Tuba/Workshop Director


Michael S. Milnarik is a member of the Innovata Brass, Brass Sect, Keys & Brass, Dr. Fidgety Dixieland Jazz Band, and the Cosmopolitan Tuba Quartet. He has performed with most of the orchestras in northern New England, the Albany Symphony, the Key West Symphony, as well as with ensembles ranging from new music to Dixieland and jazz, and also as a soloist. He has a Master of Music degree from Boston University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Michael is the founder and director of the Northeast Tuba Euphonium Workshop - a summer camp for high school, college and adult age participants, and he runs an online store called TubaStudio.com that carries "Stuff for Tuba Players."

Michael is the tuba and euphonium instructor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Tufts University, Brandeis University, Salem State College and Anna Maria College. Formerly, he taught tuba and euphonium at the University of Southern Maine (8 years) and the Lexington (MA) Public Schools (11 years).

Michael is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician.



Sanae Kanda
Pianist/Composer

Sanae Kanda enjoys a varied career as not only a pianist but also as a composer, arranger and educator. As a pianist, Dr. Kanda has given recitals in the United States and Japan. She has accompanied vocalists, strings, woodwinds and brass in a variety of styles and genres. She is a member of Keys and Brass.

As an educator, Dr. Kanda instructs all levels from beginner through professional and has taught in Japan, as well as in the United States. Currently she is a faculty member at Salem State College, Salem, Massachusetts and Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts.

Rounding out all of these areas, Dr. Kanda is also a composer and arranger. She has written several solo works for tuba and piano, euphonium and piano, trombone quartet, and has recently completed her sixth brass quintet piece. Her first work for brass "Karen" was written for Karen Antonio-Muenzinger and the Innovata Brass. It was released on the first CD recording of the Innovata Brass titled "Brass a la carte" by Stillwater Digital.

A native of Kyoto, Japan, Dr. Kanda studied music in both Japan and the United States. She holds a Masters degree in Piano Performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Collaborative Piano Performance from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts.



Patrick Nyren
Euphonium Assistant


Patrick Nyren is currently a Masters of Music Performance Degree candidate at the University of North Texas, where he studies with Brian Bowman. He received his Bachelors of Music Degree in Music Education at the University of Southern Maine School of Music, where he studied with Michael S. Milnarik. Patrick began his college education at the early age of 16. Although a young student, Patrick had the honor of being principal euphonium of the USM Concert Band during his three and a half years in the ensemble. In 2006 he was selected, by audition, to perform on the School of Music's Honors Solo Recital. He was also the winner of the school's Concerto-Aria Competition, which earned Patrick the honor of soloing with the University's Orchestra.
